Palm Beach Kennel Club Redevelopment & Trackless Trams from PBIA to Downtown: FAU Planning Workshop Proposal

Dr. Renne’s Fall 2024 Planning Workshop Final Presentation at the Frisbie Group, December 5, 2024.

The Fall 2024 graduate Planning Workshop class at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning just concluded. This marks my final course after teaching at FAU since January 2016. I will be starting at Tulane this January as the Henry Shane Professor and the new Real Estate Development Director.

For this class, we were honored to work closely with the Frisbie Group, a private real estate investment firm based in Palm Beach, Florida, specializing in the reimagination and revitalization of prime real estate assets in strategic locations.

The Frisbie Group is redeveloping the Palm Beach Kennel Club, which is about 50 acres. They were gracious to meet with my graduate students on-site and present to them about their plans early in the semester. My students also benefited from lectures about sustainable mobility from Raphael Clemente, Jonathan Hopkins, and Brian Rusher.

The class came up with scenario plans using UrbanFootprint for the greater study area, which is approximately 180 acres. They also looked at connecting PBIA to Downtown West Palm Beach using Trackless Trams, inspired by the Trackess Tram in the City of Sterling, near Perth, Australia, which has been promoted by my mentor for the past 25 years, Professor Peter Newman.

Over the course of this 15-week project, the students demonstrated exceptional effort and creativity. I encourage you to watch their final presentation and review their final report, linked below.
